Joy, playfulness, connection Norwich Youth Dance Theatre

Scholarships available

Norwich Youth Dance Theatre (NYDT) is a youth dance theatre company for 13 – 18 year olds living in/around Norwich. The company launched in September 2025 in response to something quietly disappearing: spaces where young people can move, create and express themselves through physicality. Weekly sessions are built around a shared goal or stimulus, led as a collaboration between Steph and participants themselves.

Active

Closing the gap Access to opportunity

For 13–18 year olds, opportunities to access high-quality dance and theatre are shrinking. Performing arts subjects are steadily vanishing from mainstream education, leaving behind a gap that isn’t just about skills – it’s about confidence, expression and belonging. Without spaces like NYDT, many young people are left without an outlet to process their experiences, to be seen or to feel part of something bigger than themselves. NYDT exists to hold that space. Without it, access to this kind of provision would be limited to those who can afford expensive training, deepening inequality and shutting out voices that deserve to be heard.

Lessons every Wednesday Our Schedule

NYDT meets every Wednesday during term time from 18:30–20:30 at Copperdot Studio in Norwich. We start with a check-in chat to see how everyone is doing and what’s been happening in their lives since last week. We then do a warm-up that includes a pulse-raiser (a set movement phrase or movement game), a mobilisation sequence (choreographed or improvised), and stretching (a combination of static and dynamic).

We then move on to a technique class, which slightly changes each week – there is always a focus on developing specific dance techniques. Some that Steph has identified and others that have been suggested by the group.

The final hour is our creation time. This is where we work on creating, rehearsing, and refining choreography for upcoming performances/sharings. We always end with a cool down and stretch.

Inclusive environment Intentionally affordable

The company is intentionally affordable, with fees set at £9.09 for a two-hour session, because financial barriers should never be the reason a young person misses out on creativity or community. Without this, many would simply go without. We also offer full and partial scholarships for young people experiencing hardship, and we engage a diverse company: 77% of the current participants are girls, 11% are LGBTQIA+ and 11% are young carers, with at least 40% neurodivergent.

Strength, cardio, and joy Staying active

From a physical perspective, participants are also engaging in 2 hours of physical activity each week. Each weekly session includes educating young people about safe practice when engaging in physical activity (adequate warm up, mobilisation, stretching, cool down etc). There are also cardio and strength elements embedded into the sessions. We regularly speak about the importance of hydrating and fuelling the body, especially when engaging in physical activity.

Register today

At its core, NYDT prioritises joy, playfulness and human connection. It offers a space that is safe, inclusive, and centred on the whole person, not competition. Without spaces like this, young people risk losing opportunities to build confidence, take creative risks and develop a sense of self in a supportive environment.
